Week Six

A warm and humid week created great successes for the cross-country team along with gallons of sweat.  Tuesday the Tigers were in action at Crown College for the run of the lakes.  The varsity boys were sixth led by Drew Hastings 5th place finish, varsity girls, led by Lizzy Schmidt placed second 3 points behind Chanhassen.  In the JV races Hunter Schmidt led the boys to a seventh place finish and the 1-2 finish of Kalina Wolf and Alaina Herrmann was not quite enough to overcome Chanhassen for first.  In the Junior High races Champion Abby Mickus lead the girls to a third place finish while Emmette Gerres (2nd) led the boys team to a 4th place finish.

It was great to see our inexperienced runners continue to make improvements.  They are quickly becoming knowledgable competitors.

Saturdays meet in Winona was hot.  Amazingly everyone survived and competed very well.  It was a pleasure being on a trip with such fine young people who represented the community, school, and our team with such class.  The boys JV started the day out for us with a great performance by Tommy Sullivan leading the team to a 6th place finish.  The girls varsity was the next race.  The girls ran up against two very good teams and competed to a 3rd place finish.  In the boys varsity race they managed to out pace the other A schools and finish just behind all the AA schools in 6th place.  The final race of the day was the girls JV and young Mackenzie Murphy beat the heat to lead the JV to a 2nd place finish.

The kids ran well despite the conditions.  There was only 1 PR on the day but many of the kids times were faster this year than last which means we are a bit ahead of where we were last season.

This week we are in action Tuesday at the Jaguar Challenge in Bloomington.  See below for details.

Week Five

We are officially mid season, seems hard to believe.  Once again we had a fabulous week with continued improvement being the norm.  The weather made the week a bit more arduous than it might have been and the kids continued to be impressive.  A pleasant surprise greeted us after Fridays hill workout as the parents prepared a wonderful potato bar for us.  Thank you for your generous donations of time and preparation it was great addition to our full week.

This weeks competition held at Baylor park north of Norwood is always one of the kids favorites.  It turned out very well as the Tigers won the Junior High races, both boys and girls, and the girls JV and Varsity also won the team competitions.  The JV girls perfect scored the field the second time this season they have accomplished perfection.  The JV boys placed 3rd having a strong showing.  Of the 31 medals available at the meet Belle Plaine captured 13 of them.  We also came home with a slew of ribbons.  Medalists and their races:

Week Four

Week four was shortened because of the labor day holiday, however the cross-country team was very busy.  The kids practiced hard on Tuesday went a bit lighter on Wednesday, then competed in their second meet on Thursday.  Friday was an excellent end to a busy week.

Thursdays meet the Gerry Smith Invitational held in Montgomery went very well.  Over 20 of the 69 kids from Belle Plaine running recorded personal records PR's.  Click for Meet Results.  The JV runners raced first with great results.  As a team most kids ran much faster than a week ago in Mankato.  Tommy Sullivan once again led the boys JV while Savanna DeYoung finished 7th in the girls JV race to lead the team.  In the boys varsity race Drew Hastings ran a career best 17:10 to climb into the top 5 all time for boys 5k times finishing in the medals in 9th place.  Lizzy Schmidt once again led the girls varsity with a 11th place finish good for a medal.  Cassie Stolt finished in 16th just out of medal position with the other top 5 girls finishing in the top 40 runners.  The varsity squads also ran great times improving tremendously in a weeks time.  In the junior high races Emmett Gerres placed 5th overall while Abby Mickus ran to a second place finish.  The junior high teams each place high among the 20 plus schools in attendance.  It was a great day to race and wonderful to see the progress the kids have made.

This week we are busy once again with mini harriers starting on Monday.  The kids will run out to oakcrest and help supervise the mini harriers to introduce them to what cross-country is all about.  Tuesday is our meet at Baylor park north of Norwood, see race times below.  Wednesday morning we will have another optional morning practice at 6:25 am with breakfast to follow.  There will be the normal after school practice Wednesday as well.  We shall attempt to end practice a bit earlier on Wednesday because of religion classes.  Thursday and Friday practice as usual.

Week Three

This week saw the team competing at Mankato East where the the boys teams were second to Mankato in each race and the girls teams won all three races.  Leading the team for the boys were Drew Hastings, Tristan Cruz, and Emmett Gerres in their respective races.  For the girls Lizzy Schmidt, Savanna DeYoung, and Abby Mickus led the way in their respective races.  There were many outstanding performances Tuesday in Mankato including 2 personal bests.  Once again the kids had an exceptional week of practicing.  They continue to impress us with their hard work and eagerness to improve.

Coming up in week four school begins and practices will be after school from 3:20-5:30.  We also have a big meet in Montgomery on Thursday.  If you haven't been to a race yet the Montgomery golf course is a great venue to watch cross-country.  Come on out and see what your runner has been up to.
